In reaching for her, Brad has struck his head on the edge of the counter, a sound like a thumped melon.

For a time then neither will move. They might be some still-shot in black and white, two models posed for a painter, an image that could haunt Betty’s future as she will struggle to remember and forget at once, as she dreams of once more dancing. But for the moment they just slump there. The world seems frozen in this frame. But maybe the future will be where someone will find them, after the phone has long-since stopped, smoke from the mush drifted out, the birds outside gone from the empty feeder. Maybe, after hours, even days, it will be the UPS man looking for one of the neighbors. Maybe it will be the meter reader glancing in by chance through the open curtains. Maybe it will be the neighbors themselves, smelling something burned. Whoever it might turn out to be, maybe there can still be someone out there who can come and find them.
